Tenerife is a longstanding favourite with Irish holidaymakers, no doubt owed to its sunny disposition, gorgeous beaches and varied resorts. Equally perfect for a family holiday or couples getaway, there’s plenty to see and do in Tenerife – it just depends on what you’re after.
As the largest island in the Canaries, Tenerife is extremely popular with tourists and island-hopping Canarians looking for a long weekend. Its diverse landscapes mean that it appeals to all sorts of tourists, whether you’re looking for a laidback beach break or an active holiday trekking through rainforests.
What to do
We can’t talk about a holiday to Tenerife without mentioning Mount Teide. This spectacular volcano acts as the highest point in Spain, and is quite the sight to behold. There are many different ways you can enjoy seeing it, whether that’s on a cable car ride or a hike through Teide National Park.
If you’re looking for something that’s a little more family orientated, Siam Park is Europe’s biggest waterpark, with incredible rides inspired by Thai architecture.
Best Beaches
Perhaps Tenerife’s most famous beach, Playa de las Americas is a man-made haven, with clean sands and plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas.
Famous for its giant cliffs which surround you on all sides, this unique beach offers volcanic black sands and waters perfect for water sports.
Playa Jardin
Located in Puerto de la Cruz, Playa Jardin is one of Tenerife’s most popular beaches, owed to its memorable black sands, calm waters and nearby facilities.
This beautiful natural beach is laid with coarse volcanic sand, but there are plenty of sun loungers available to rent.
Las Teresitas
With its golden sands and palm trees, we wouldn’t blame you for confusing Las Teresitas Beach with somewhere in the Caribbean.
Where to stay
A favourite for celebrities such as the Beckhams, Costa Adeje is both beautiful and luxurious, with plenty of beautiful beaches and designer shops.
Situated on the south coast of Tenerife, Costa Adeje has something for everyone. From its shops and boutiques to the plethora of waterfront restaurants serving fresh seafood, hours can be spent making the most of the sunshine in this famous resort. For families, Siam Park is one of the biggest and best waterparks in Europe!
Stay in the Jardines de Nivaria Hotel, which enjoys a beachfront location and huge swimming pool. Travel Republic customer Carole says, “The hotel is truly excellent. Beautiful setting and very professional staff. Can understand why people return to the hotel time after time. An oasis of peace and comfort away from the crowds of tourists. There are a wide variety of hotel rooms so worth paying a little more for sea view suites.”
Made for the partygoers and night owls, Playa de las Americas is overflowing with bars, cafes and clubs offering 24-hour festivities.
Definitely more suited to a younger crowd, many people in search of a good night out flock to Veronicas, the famous strip lined with bars and clubs. However, if you fancy a break from the festivities, Playa de las Americas also boasts many golf courses, too.
If you want to stay close to town but still want a break from the party atmosphere, the Villa Cortes Hotel is ideally situated – and also happens to be one of our Travel Republic Hotel Awards 2017 winners! Travel Republic customer Paul says, “This is the second time we have booked this hotel in two years for our holiday. A beautiful hotel, located at the end of the strip of Playa de las Americas. Fantastic food, rooms immaculate and very well kept.”
Packed with plenty of character, Puerto de la Cruz continues to be a firm favourite with tourists. Tucked away in the Orotava Valley, you can expect to see plenty of lush greenery veined with cobblestoned streets and met by calm turquoise waters.
Families and couples will love a trip to Loro Parque, where you’ll meet all manner of sealife including dolphins and orca whales; or, for something even more exciting, the Lago Martianez waterpark is a hit with kids and big kids alike.
Stay in Casablanca Apartments, which boasts family friendly facilities as well as a prime location close to the Botanic Gardens. Travel Republic customer Ian says, “The design of the complex is super. For a lively family there is lots on site. Bar, restaurant area, entertainment space, bowling green, vibrant swimming pool.
