Captain Correlli’s Mandolin in Kefalonia

Set during the Italian occupation of Greece in World War II, an officer falls in love with a local woman and begins to question his role in the war.

What takes place at the scene: Much of the film is set around the island of Kefalonia, but it’s when Penélope Cruz and Christian Bale leap off the jetty and frolic in the clear Aegean waters of Horgota Beach that we want to join them for a splash.

People who starred: Penélope Cruz, Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale, John Hurt

Year of release in UK: 2001

Insider blogger tips to Kefalonia

Kefalonia in Greece became widely known after the movie Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. The film, shot throughout many locations on the island, provides the perfect setting for battle and romance. The enchanting seafront village of Sami is my favourite location, and if you get a chance to visit, you must see the famous Melissani cave which illuminates with bright colours daily. Visitors should also flock beaches such as Myrtos for a spot of snorkelling or reading. If you can’t think of where to go on your next summer holiday, this is the perfect place to start your love story.

Fun Fact

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin includes a cast of three Oscar winners, including Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz and Christian Bale.

For the best weather in Kefalonia, visitors should travel to the island between April and November – but for the perfect temperature to relax on a beautiful beach is July and August, for those who like it hot.

A short drive north from Sami Village, on the Greek island of Kefalonia, is the scenic Horgota Beach. It is a quiet bay with little facilities, but rich in vegetation and clear blue waters. For those interested in history, the island has many war memorials, monastries and castles to explore.
