There’s no doubt about it – the arrival of May brings with it the very first hints of summer as the weather gets warmer and the nights longer. If you haven’t already made plans for your holiday, now might be the time you’re travelling feet start feeling a little itchy and the urge to get away from it all increases.
May can be the perfect time for a holiday. But where to go? Well, to provide a little inspiration here’s our guide to some of the best holiday destinations in May.
MAJORCA
The largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands, Majorca is always a hugely popular destination. It has something for everyone, making it ideal for a family holiday but also for couples wanting a quieter, romantic visit. Majorca has a party side to it, in the form of Magaluf, and in May the club scene is just beginning to hot up ahead of the peak season. Neighbouring Palma Nova is suited to families, while other highly rated resorts include Santa Ponser, Cala D’or and Alcudia.

THE ALGARVE
From Ireland it’s just a quick hop of a flight to reach Portugal’s Algarve, a charming region known for its family friendly beaches and coastal resorts. With average temperatures in May hovering around the 20-degree mark and flight times as short as two hours, it’s no wonder that the Algarve is a hot spot for Irish holidaymakers. For a buzzing nightlife, head to Lagos or Praia da Rocha; for surfing and water sports, try Albufeira or Praia do Amado. For somewhere altogether quieter, explore quaint Meia Praia.

If you like your holidays all inclusive then Greece takes some beating, especially its superb islands and resorts that deliver a fantastic beach holiday. There is a selection of top-class destinations boasting sumptuous stretches of golden sand, crystal clear sea and towns and villages steeped in culture. Take your pick from Crete, the largest of the Greek islands with a coastline spanning 650 miles, sun-soaked Rhodes – where May temperatures can peak at 25 degrees – or the livelier resorts of Zante and Kos. FLORIDA
Looking for a long-haul May holiday? Then a trip to Florida could offer a spectacular experience. At the centre of it all lies Orlando, famed as the theme party capital of the world and the home to attractions such as Walt Disney World. But Florida has far more than theme parks to thrill and delight holidaymakers. Spend some time in the hip and stylish, art deco-inspired landscape of Miami. The city is full of great restaurants, rooftop bars and clubs, and the Miami Beach and South Beach area is a haven for sun seekers. MALTA
We love Malta, that hidden diamond of an island tucked away in the middle of the Mediterranean. It’s a great choice for a May holiday. Malta is a paradise of gorgeous beaches, little coves, ancient ruins and striking architecture, and luxurious lagoons in which to swim and paddle. If you’re holidaying with the kids, there’s still plenty to keep them entertained in Malta. Aside from water sports in abundance – scuba diving, jet skiing and kayaking – there is also the National Aquarium and Splash and Fun Water Park.
