1. PONTA DE PIEDADE
This series of imposing cliff and rock formations near the town of Lagos is one of the Algarve’s finest natural wonders. You can reach them via the public footpaths which pass Praia Dona Ana beach and Praia do Camilo, or see them up close by boat where you will travel through pillars and grottoes.
2. COSTA VICENTINA
Dramatic beaches and coastal scenery can be found in Costa Vicentina which forms part of a national park. The area is popular with surfers thanks to its choppy waters, and the coastline is largely undeveloped backed by steep golden cliffs.
3. SILVES CASTLE
Silves (the old Moorish capital) is home to the remnants of Silves Castle which dates back to the 8th century. Silves was once an important centre of trading and culture, and the site remains one of the best preserved castles in Portugal. Today you can explore the red sandstone castle and take in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from its hilltop location.
Like much of the Algarve, this cliff side fishing village is filled with pretty whitewashed houses, traditional café’s, shops and a main square. The sheltered and small beach is popular with families, and is a great place to relax for a few hours after exploring the local area.
5. CABO DE SÃO VICENTE
The wild and remote landscape of Cabo de São Vicente is around 6km west of Sagres and 40km from Lagos. You can explore the restored lighthouse and museum here that sit on the edge of the cliffs. Visit at sunset for best views.
