A very disappointing stay, on arrival to book in we observed our allocated room being given to a gentleman who was complaining g that he would not stay in the room he had been given. I asked regarding this and was told we had been given a larger room in the exchange. We were placed in what was called the garden lodge, this is a building at the far side of the car park. I could manage the location although far from ideal, and we were pushed for time to get to our event so accepted the accomodation given and decided to ignore the musty, damp odour, the stains on the carpet and the fact that the toilet was pre filled! But a flush and a wipe over rectified the unsavoury situation! On returning after our evening out tired and ready for a good nights sleep, we hit our bed knowing that we were unhappy with our room and deciding to do nothing about it, quickly changed when we realised just how cold we were, the bed was damp and felt wet and I could not get warm. By 3 am I was dressed and using bath towels for extra warmth. We did not linger in the morning. Straight across for breakfast and warm coffee. The service in the restaurant was fraught, they explained that staff had not turned up and they really worked hard and were pleasant and professional all the way through breakfast even under the circumstances. This is really the only positive thing I can say about the stay. I paid my bill in full and stated that I did want to express my concerns regarding the room and the receptionist did ask me to speak to the manager, which I declined to do, nothing could of made me feel better about the night I just wanted to return home to some comfort. I would never stay there again although I have been led to believe that the room I was given is due a total renovation. More than due in my opinion. A standard room should never mean cold, damp, stained and musty! I hope the hotel does look into the issue raised room number 23 as I feel nobody else should ever be asked to try and sleep in that room. Also could the old broken umber elks stand behind the front door be thrown away. It's a serious trip hazard after a night out!

The staff were friendly and helpful, particularly in the Walled Garden bar and bistro. The food was good although I was slightly disappointed there wasn't a greater range on the menu. My one reservation about the hotel was that it had a rather musty smell which I did not find too pleasant. This was throughout the hotel, but not the walled garden bar.
