  • Excellent hotel and staff. The lovely buffet breakfasites served in the fancy dining room is amazing, makes you feel like a princess! The only negative was the lack of a tea or coffee machine in our room but we got tea in the piano bar for about £5 for 2 people and the atmosphere was lovely, felt like a high tea for no price at all.

We had a really relaxing time at the Pestana Palace Hotel and national Monument.
Even though the property was a short distance to the city centre it did not at all prevent us having an overall great holiday. The property is very special and I recommend it highly. The staff are 90% friendly the other 10% could be a little more polite, anyway that's people for you. The Breakfast is plentyfull and dinner if you so choose in the evening was delicate and tasty, the wine list had some lovely bottles to choose from. The only fault I had was with the bedlinen. The sheets are all polycotton, (which I did not expect from a 5* property) . I asked for this to be changed to 100% cotton but they could not help me. They did however change the duvet to a lighter summer one as the heavy down was just too warm for me. I will visit this property again and look forward to doing so.

Top Tip: There is a lovely little park only 2 minutes walk from the hotel. I brought my daughter there after buying some corn in the local shop to feed the birds.

Top Tip: There are a few nice restaurants and pubs about 5 mins walk away, situated at the marina, beside the massive bridge and across the river from the 110ft statue, you can't miss it!

Check-in date:

The hotel provided a pleasant stay, not sure how it attained or retains its leading hotel of the world status as it falls a long way behind other 5 star hotels we have stayed at. Don't expect: iPod docking station, tea/coffee maker, complimentary water and fruit in room. Do expect: beautiful grounds, a nice indoor and outside pool, courteous and helpful staff, noise from adjoining rooms throughout the day and night. The buffet breakfast was good although not exceptional, thought for a hotel of this standard sparkling wine with breakfast would have been included. Free transportation by courtesy vehicle - only 7 seats per journey into town with no guarantee of return transportation.

Top Tip: There is a nice Italian restaurant on the river about 30 min walk from the hotel.

This is a beautiful hotel, all the staff are extremely helpful, professional and friendly. The free shuttle bus service into town is a plus as the hotel is situated a good way from the city centre. There are no restaurants or shops within easy walking distance and eating in the hotel is expensive as are the prices charged for alcoholic beverages. However the food is of a very high standard as is the service provided by the staff.

Top Tip: You need to be aware that the hotel secures 300 euros from your credit card upon registration and this is not returned to your account until a few days after settling your account. Unfortunately we were not informed of this although it is hotel policy to do so.
