Nice hotel, but not much else in the area. Only a couple of restaurants within walking distance and no beach nearby. It is fairly noisy as it is close to the port and the cars and trucks leaving the ferry are clearly heard. The swimming pool and area around it are nice, but in the shade from about 5 in the afternoon.
The food is fine but a bit monotonous, every fish/meat dish seems to be served with the exact same vegetables and potatoes and even same garnish. The breakfast buffet is good, a wide variety available.
The mini bar was reasonably priced.
“ Top Tip: The seaview room with terrace is well worth paying extra for, its massive and it has sunbeds and table and chairs on the terrace.

“ We stayed in the Grand Hotel Mgarr for three nights in June 2011. It is a beautiful hotel and we booked a room with a sea view. This is well worth the extra money. We selected the half board option and were not disappointed - the food was delicious and the choice of menu superb. Evening meals always had a choice of fish, meat and vegetarian dishes. Buffet breakfast offered a wide and varied choice of menu. But the thing that makes the hotel stand out is the service offered by the staff - they were absolutely superb. Each and every member of staff from cleaning staff to receptionists were friendly and welcoming from the moment we arrived until our departure. Just one piece of advice for intending travellers - checking in time is not until 3 p.m.
“ Top Tip: We travelled around the island during our stay and found the local people to be so friendly and helpful towards tourists. However the village of Ghanjsielem which is just beside the hotel is a must. Walk up there after dinner for a night cap and you will be pleasantly surprised by the prices.
